Eyelid cyst (chalazion) removal

A chalazion is a cyst in the eyelid that is caused by inflammation of a blocked meibomian gland, usually on the upper eyelid.

If you have this condition you may feel:

1) A swelling on the eyelid
2) Eyelid tenderness
3) Increased tearing
4) Heaviness of the eyelid

Eyelid cysts like this often go away spontaneously, or with conservative measures. If you have a large cyst which has persisted for several months, then surgical removal may be indicated. After an examination to check that it is necessary, our Consultant can remove this for you in the clinic. The procedure is performed as a local anaesthetic, and normally takes about ten minutes.
